Deep Work

"Professional activities performed in a state of distraction-free concentration that push your cognitive capabilities to their limit. These efforts create new value, improve your skill, and are hard to replicate."

Cal Newport, in his book, Deep Work

At the start of every workday during this Challenge, you aim to hit 90 minutes of uninterrupted concentration on one task or project.

If you're new to deep work, this is not easy. In this case, you try to get as close to the goal as you can every day. Your objective will be to hit the 90-minute milestone at the end of the program.

There's no failure, only not trying.

Your coach and peers will be there along on the journey with you. They'll answer your questions and share their experiences and tips.

The program

Here's an overview of all the elements that make up the Deep Work Challenge.

Schedule

Saent Challenges are cohort-based and start on the first Monday of every month. Here's what you can expect for this two-week Deep Work Challenge:

  • Saturday, January 2nd: receive briefing materials (incl. tips)
  • Sunday, January 3rd, 5 pm EST: registration closes

  • Sunday, January 17th: last day of Challenge
  • 18th - January 24th: reflection week
  • 25th - January 31st: break before next Challenge

Throughout the Challenge you'll receive a handful of emails with guidance and prompts. You can also communicate (asynchronously) with your coach and peers at any time through a private, designated Slack channel.

During reflection week, you're encouraged to write out or record your learnings and share them with your coach and peers.

Your coach

Tim Metz, cofounder of Saent, is your coach for this Challenge. As the creator of Lifeline and the Saent Button, he knows a thing or five about Deep Work. Friends and coworkers regularly describe him as the most organized and productive person they've ever met.

As with all Saent Challenges, your coach actively participates and shares his performance and experience throughout the program.

Required tools

This Deep Work Challenge requires only a few tools:

  • Access to an email account to receive a handful of emails with guidance and prompts
  • A timer (in case you're not using Saent Lifeline for macOS)
  • A calendar to block time for your Deep Work sessions
  • Ability to take notes during and after your daily Challenge session
  • Slack to stay in touch with your coach and peers asynchronously (optional)
  • Saent Lifeline (optional).

  • Stay motivated and accountable through your coach and peers
  • Time for reflection baked in to instill learnings from the program
